February Landscaping Tips: How To Get Ready For Spring

Plan Out Projects

Although it’s tempting to procrastinate, it’s best to start planning your spring projects now. Inspect your garden tools and supplies, search for areas needing fresh plantings, and begin researching plants that will thrive in your specific climate and soil.

Keep Protecting Plants

We’re not in the clear yet, and frigid temperatures can still have an impact on your landscape. That’s why it’s important to continue protecting sensitive plantings. You can also use de-icing salts on paving stones in order to prevent loved ones from slipping as they walk. (Make sure to avoid Rock Salt, as this can damage your hardscapes).

Continue Composting

Compost provides your plants essential nutrients to thrive. Keep adding to your compost pile with things like fruit and veggie scraps, coffee grounds, grass clippings and more. Don’t have a compost pile? Now’s the perfect time to start! In a few months you’ll have a thriving compost pile to help your plants flourish.

Care For Your Garden

Now’s the time to prepare your garden for the upcoming season. Replace any winter leaf mulch that’s blown off during the winter months. And, as outside temperatures/snow cover/soil moisture allow, till or spade your garden. If you’re able, sow new seeds to get a jump start on planting!

Maintain Trees & Shrubs

Protect your trees and shrubs from snow damage by brushing off any snow buildup they’ve acquired. (Don’t shake the branches, as this can cause them to break). Prune back any dead wood or damage that’s been done during the cold snap.
